I should say I've not seen that many failures and we have quite a few Seagate SSHD's in service (both laptop & desktop systems).The last issue here is the cost for needed SSD. The iMac is Apple's line of all-in-one desktop computers. I laugh when you talked about the ED being on usb 2 or FW. I heard that samsung are amongst the best.
