I read "Augustus" after reading the earlier two novels. Augustus is superior though, in my mind, because in this — Williams’s third and last novel — he has come to full maturity in his writing. The book is dense but splendid. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 November 2013. Thema des Briefromans ist der Aufstieg des jungen Octavius zum Augustus, dem ersten Kaiser des römischen Reichs. Augustus ist ein historischer Roman des amerikanischen Autors John Williams. Williams received the 1973 National Book Award for his final novel, "Augustus", a historical novel set in the early days of the Roman Empire. His prose is as thick and rich as marbled meat. 5.0 out of 5 stars Augustus - A unique and special book.
He said it’s because Europeans are interested in characters’ interior lives — in their existential choices. The setting in antiquity may make the book seem forbidding, but it is well worth the effort. In Augustus, his third great novel, John Williams took on an entirely new challenge, a historical narrative set in classical Rome, exploring the life of the founder of the Roman Empire.
Incidentally, I asked a European — Oscar van Gelderen, who’s going to bring out my biography in the Netherlands (no publisher here expressed much interest) — why Williams is such a sensation in France, Germany, and other places. 5 people found this helpful. Comment Report abuse. Augustus is cast as a loyal friend and true patriot dedicated to the glory of Rome and the betterment of its people. To tell the story, Williams turned to the epistolary novel, a genre that was new to him, transforming and transcending it just as he did the western in Butcher’s Crossing and the campus novel in Stoner .
