Flash is fin for storing stuff like settings, but not for main storage. SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 24, 2019 — MICRON INSIGHT — Micron Technology, Inc., today announced a breakthrough in nonvolatile memory technology with the introduction of the world’s fastest SSD, the Micron X100 SSD. The Micron X100 SSD is the first solution in a family of products from Micron targeting storage- and memory-intensive applications for the data center.
While this is good business, it means that only Intel can make money by selling 3D XPoint at a loss.
Chip makers and partners Intel and Micron Technology unveiled their jointly developed and manufactured 3D XPoint memory three weeks ago to much fanfare, but it is still perhaps sinking in to system architects and future system buyers how dramatic a move this is and how much it will change the memory hierarchy in systems and the applications that ride on it. All Rights Reserved. I don’t care about using it for system ram, because it also has a limited re-write life, just a lot longer the flash. With NVDIMM technology, Micron delivers a powerful persistent memory solution capable of meeting many of recently`s biggest computing challenges. And with a DRAM price collapse already started, this could be a very long time.On the other hand, if we assume that Micron sells it in chip form (which the company has never said they would do) there might be an opportunity in applications like the ones you suggest. In certain cases XPoint will offer that.If you disable this cookie, we will not be able to save your preferences. But WHY?? Call and e-mail executives. The Seeking Alpha writer who goes by the name “Gold Panda” reported on an article I wrote and a presentation I made. It’s hard to see why a consumer would be attracted to one of the Optane bundles.
For more than 40 years our innovations have been instrumental to the world’s most significant technology advancements and market transitions. The announcement this week by Intel and Micron Technology of 3D XPoint memory, which will sit somewhere between DRAM and NAND flash in future systems, has everyone thinking about the architectural, economic, and performance implications of emerging memory technologies in devices of all kinds – including those humming away in the datacenters of the world. Micron will need to wait until XPoint’s cost drops below DRAM costs to make money selling Quantx. Thanks for your comment. A part of this has been the company’s orchestration of DRAM interface migration: FPM, EDO, SDRAM, DDR, DDR2, DDR3, & DDR4. So he did not plagiarize himself. This is also why XPoint needs to be compared to both DRAM and an SSD.I don’t know when the next generation of 3D XPoint will be released, but you can be certain that it will still have the same pricing: Half as much as DRAM.
Stay ahead of the tech trends with industy updates delivered to you every week! The Micron X100 SSD will be in limited sampling with select customers this quarter.Since 1987 - Covering the Fastest Computers in the World and the People Who Run ThemReproduction in whole or in part in any form or medium without express written permission of Tabor Communications, Inc. is prohibited. 3D XPoint is to be compared to SSD / NAND and NOT DRAM!
It is two completely different products as one hold the data when powered off while the other does not!!! Here’s how I usually explain it:As opposed to what is written here, 3D-Xpoint price per GB is cheaper than DRAM by a factor of 2 or more (Amazon).Yes. With NVDIMM technology, Micron delivers a powerful persistent memory solution capable of meeting many of recentlys biggest computing challenges.
DRAM makers are pushing into the next phase of scaling, but they are facing several challenges as the memory technology approaches its physical limit. Its manufacturing cost isn’t yet low enough to make sense. It will be interesting to see what AMD does in response to Optane. If it doesn’t fit, then computers will use a cheaper alternative that provides equal or better performance. 3D XPoint is a necessary part of Intel’s platform strategy. This means that every time you visit this website you will need to enable or disable cookies again. The simple answer is that it doesn’t make financial sense for Micron to ship these products at this time.I’m not holding my breath.Peter, Not at all plagiarism.
Just like some wanted to pay extra fro a SSD over a HDD there will be people who want to pay more for the 3D XPoint than they the cost of the SSD in order to get that absolutely insane performance upgrade!! This is how every layer fits into the memory/storage hierarchy.Strictly Necessary Cookie should be enabled at all times so that we can save your preferences for cookie settings.Copyright © 2011-2020. I didn’t realize that the post was a little confusing since it discusses both cost (the manufacturer’s cost to produce the product) and price (what that product can sell for in the marketplace. I want stuff I buy to last.Jim Handy, Objective Analysis, on Semiconductor MemoriesIf the sales price of a chip is lower than its cost to manufacture the manufacturer loses money.“3D XPoint must sell for a lower price than DRAM or it will not be adopted” you say.
