On several occasions we got to go to the Bear’s Topanga house , which I recall as being very close to the Topanga Post Office . Steppenwolf did an album cover in a burned out house that was supposedly Canned Heat’s. The album was At Your Birthday Party.Love Love Loved the Heat and Blind Owl, and that unique voice..such a tragety a very good lifelong friend aND BANDMATE OF MINE USED TO WORK UP c h TUNES..AND OF COURSE CLOSED OUR NIGHTS WITH THE fRIED hOCKEY bOOGIE jAM..SUCH FUN AND AWESOME MEMORIES..thank you for your commentary..D HessI’ve written a bio of Alan which you might find of interest; you can read an excerpt on my website at BlindOwlBio.com. I also have a memory of us sitting in their living room , rolling an entire lid of crappy pot in the giant Cheech & Chong paper from the Big Bambu album , using a pair of pliers as a roach clip . Wilson got cooked on Owsley acid and was having flashbacks.
Thanks! That would make things a lot easier.Incredible. I have a memory of us jamming in the garage / basement while a rotund fellow stood in the corner smoking a joint – I asked him nicely if he wouldn’t mind passing it around , which he did . His ashes are in Sequoia National Park in Central California. He started gathering these records at a very young age. Bob "The Bear" Hite (February 26, 1943 - April 5, 1981) was the lead singer of blues-rock band Canned Heat from 1965 up until his death in 1981. in 1965, aged 22, Hite formed the band Canned Heat with Alan Wilson, Larry Taylor, Frank Cook and Henry Vestine. Love your work!Thank you for the information. The toxicology reports stated that no alcohol and no drugs were found in his body. That would be seriously interesting. .Being interested in Alan Wison and Canned Heat, I realized that he was born 9 months after I was and we lived about 1/2 mile from each other in Arlington Heights. Bob Hite, founding member and singer of the unforgettable group Canned Heat own one of the most impressive collections of US 78rpms. In the middle of the living room were several rows of library shelves , filled with old 78’s . The house has since been destroyed by a flood.I’d also recommend that fans check out the family tribute website at AlanWilsonCannedHeat.com, a wonderful resource including videos, memorabilia and music downloads.Alan Wilson is not buried in MA. It's great to hear from someone with expert knowledge on the subject. The Heat was supporting Iron Butterfly. The foundation is all that remains. Thanks for writing this!I'am really interested in what Bob "The Bear" Hite' s home looked like prior to all the damage when it was in its prime back in the 60's. ?.
The You Tube Video shows an address of 701 Topango. I absolutely love old farm buildings. The graffiti really makes it cool to photograph too, but the story behind it is what I found most fascinating. When I first moved to LA over a decade ago, a mudslide destroyed a mansion in Laurel Canyon. my two friendsI must have driven by this place a thousand times and had no idea about what happened here. The location of the death of Blind Owl is correctly place upon that lot, but the original house was washed away in a flash flood. The live concert from the European Tour right before Alan Wilson’s death. You could stick your thumb out and have Hippy chicks give you rides to the beach.what an era! Thanks, James. My research strongly indicates that he did not commit suicide, but was rather the victim of tragic circumstance. I like when graffiti is artfully done and actually looks good. I was there when we took them up there with Bobs wife.Al Wilson’s final show with Canned Heat took place on August 22, 1970 at the Inglewood Forum in California. Bob Hite, Soundtrack: Monterey Pop. Some called it suicide, others an accident, regardless it was a terrible loss. On September 3, 1970, on the eve of Canned Heat's European tour, Alan Wilson was found dead in his sleeping bag on the hillside behind Bob Hite's house. It's a shame the records aren't available online.
