Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson Mattie Cook feels somewhat insulated inside her beloved Cook Coffeehouse from the plague that is raging all around Philadelphia. (What is in italics is to be replaced with your character.) Fever 1793 is a book about the yellow fever epidemic that plagues Philadelphia in said year. Much of the first part of the story takes place in the Cook Coffeehouse. Then tragedy strikes the coffeehouse, and Mattie is trapped in a living nightmare. It became evident that Dr Blackburn's visits had been financed by the Confederacy, and that a certain Union informer had been offered $60,000 to distribute Dr. Blackburn's trunks of soiled clothing to Union cities including Boston, Philadelphia, Washington and Norfolk. In 1798 he was appointed as the chief doctor at the fever hospital. The mortality rate that year was roughly the same as it had been at Bush Hill in 1793, despite radical difference between the therapies used.Some neighboring towns had patrols on the roads to prevent entry by refugees.
